More than 160 new cycle parking and 160 scooter parking spaces have been installed in Darlington schools during December. This takes the total number of cycle parking spaces for young people in the town to more than1,800. The new cycle parking facilities have been paid for by funding from Darlington Borough Council’s Local Transport Plan.

The Minipod is a unique type of cycle parking that is designed to get children cycling. The units can each store up to eight bikes and eight scooters. They can accommodate cycles with 12” – 26” wheels and are specifically aimed at children up to 11 years of age making them ideal for primary schools.

Councillor David Lyonette, Darlington Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, said:
“In 2005 just 0.9% of pupils cycled to school in Darlington and only 19 of our schools had secure cycle parking. Since then we have worked hard to encourage more young people to cycle including making sure every school has sufficient cycle parking capacity and we are delighted to say that as a result, 7.4% of pupils now cycle to school – that is over four times the national average “

The Schools that have received Minipods are: Borough Road Nursery, George Dent Nursery, Firthmoor Primary, St John’s CE Aided Primary, Harrowgate Hill Primary, Heathfield Primary, Hurworth Primary, St Bede’s RC VA Primary and Polam Hall School.
